Bangkok, 23 January, 2023 – Continuing an annual tradition of extending Chinese New Year greetings to the people of Thailand and China as well as the world over, high-level Thai and Chinese officials gathered on Sunday to wish health, wealth, and prosperity to all in the Year of the Rabbit.
This special event took place on Chinese New Year on 22 January, 2023, at the Chinatown Chinese New Year 2023 celebrations at Yaowarat Road in Bangkok – the biggest Chinese New Year celebrations in Thailand.
A highlight of the event was a recorded video in which HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn extended her well wishes on the occasion of Chinese New Year and for the year ahead.
Leading the greetings and well-wishing ceremony was H.E. Mr. Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn, Thailand’s Minister of Tourism and Sports, and H.E. Mr. Yang Xin, Charge d’Affaires of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China to Thailand.
Mr. Phiphat said “This Chinese New Year as we celebrate this most joyous of festivals, we also honour 48 years of diplomatic relations between Thailand and China – a momentous occasion in itself. As well, Thailand has now fully reopened to international tourism, and with all of this in mind I extend my warmest and most sincere Chinese New Year wishes to one and all.”
Mr. Yang Xin added that “Each year Thailand stages one of the biggest Chinese New Year celebrations outside of China, and it is a wonderful occasion in which our two countries come together in the spirit of ongoing friendship and cooperation.”
Also attending the ceremony was Mr. Chadchart Sittipunt, Governor of Bangkok; Mr. Yuthasak Supasorn, Governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT); and Mr. Thapana Sirivadhanabhakdi, Chairman of Yaowarat Chinese New Year 2023 organizing committee; along with leading figures and representatives of the public and private sectors.
Following the greetings and well wishes, the official opening ceremony of the Chinatown Chinese New Year 2023 celebrations took place, featuring cultural performances, dragon dances, and a concert.
This also saw the two Hong Kong celebrities Michelle Yim and Simon Yam Tat Wah as well as Hong Kong renowned influencer, Mr. Roger Wu join in the festivities and extend their Chinese New Year Greetings.
Along with the Bangkok celebrations, the TAT also supports Chinese New Year celebrations in other destinations around Thailand, and is supported by China’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China to Thailand – both in attendance by high-level officials and cultural performances from China.
