Bangkok, 26 September, 2022 – The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is pleased to report that one of Bangkok’s largest and most creative art events, the Bangkok Art Biennale (BAB) is returning for its third edition and will run for a four-month period at cultural and heritage venues across the Thai capital from 22 October 2022 to 23 February 2023.
Mr. Yuthasak Supasorn, TAT Governor, said “The Bangkok Art Biennale really is an amazing event that’s not to be missed. Stretching across the city and incorporating art and cultural spaces as well as iconic landmarks, temples, and public spaces, it offers tourists and locals alike the chance to experience contemporary art in a fascinating setting like no other.”
Supported by TAT, the BAB 2022 festival aims to transform the bustling Bangkok cityscape into a fascinating creative playground for artists and art lovers. The theme of CHAOS: CALM for this year’s event is meant to reflect the tumultuous times of recent years from the pandemic to climate change to socio-political unrest, and to offer hope through art – celebrating a diversity of identities, cultures, and histories.
The impressive line-up of 73 local and international artists from 31 countries participating in BAB 2022 spans Europe, Africa, America, Asia and Oceania. It includes those from the USA, the United Kingdom, Spain, France, Belgium, Italy, Germany, Russia, Ethiopia, India, Nigeria, Pakistan, China, Japan, Australia, Singapore, Vietnam, Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, and Thailand.
Their work will be on show at 11 different locations in Bangkok, including Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC), Museum Siam, JWD Art Space, Queen Sirikit National Convention Center (QSNCC), CentralWorld, Samyan Mitrtown, The PARQ, Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn), and Wat Pho (Temple of the Reclining Buddha). The festival will also be viewable online through the BAB Virtual Venue, which will offer a number of artworks created specifically for the digital realm.
The BAB program also includes educational conferences, talks, hands-on workshops, and guided visits.
Highlight presentations of the programme include a site-specific presentation of new sculptures by British artist Antony Gormley at the iconic Temple of the Reclining Buddha, Qatari-American artist and filmmaker Sophia Al-Maria’s first presentation in Thailand, and spotlights on key Thai artists Satu ≠ Padu Collaborative (also known as Prach Pimarnman, Kamin Lertchaiprasert and Chitti Kasemkitvatana.
