The Photo Story: Tasting Taiwan

LPMI Deputy Art Director T Krishna Prabakar spends an evening in a vibrant market in Taichung, Taiwan

After having eaten fantastic food in other parts of Taiwan, I find myself wandering down Feng Chia Night Market in Taichung. Known for its fantastic food and a great vibe, this is one the biggest and most popular markets in Taiwan.

IT’S AMAZING TO SEE HOW THE STREET IS BUZZING even on a regular week day. Standing outside a famous local restaurant, I notice a young woman working meticulously on her orders in the open kitchen just behind the seating area.

Outside, the lanes in this area are getting narrower, with new stalls seemingly springing up every passing minute. These new establishments, mainly food stalls, cater to evening visitors who come for everything from candies to marinated meats. I watch a group of men trying almost everything on the menu in a stall not too far away from me. Circled around a small table loaded with their orders, they seem to be enjoying the feast of a lifetime. The spread looks so delicious that I’m tempted to invite myself to their merry-making!

After hours of strolling the streets of the market, I find myself a quiet spot at which to end my evening. I order some steamed crab with veggies to go along with local beer. Taking my time, I watch night fall over Feng Chia Night Market. It’s a memory that I will cherish for years to come.
