The Photo Story: The colours of South Beach, Miami, The USA

David Behar seeks shelters on the vivid white sands of South Beach, Miami

I have spent much of my life in Florida. I started photographing skimboarding and surfing when I was around 13, because I loved those sports, then continued shooting on beaches ever since. I am most drawn to those with blue water, sun and white expanses of sand – the more sand and the clearer the water, the better. South Beach in Miami is my favourite spot, and much of my family still lives there, so, whenever I go to visit, I spend a few extra days shooting. Some of the structures you see here are used to rent umbrellas or cabanas (shelters with an open side) from. Art Deco architecture is huge in South Beach, and these structures reflect the spirit of Miami, including the love of bright colours and interesting design.
I particularly enjoyed shooting the red and white lighthouse-style lifeguard tower (facing page). Everything in that shot was set up so perfectly – the woman standing equal distance from the tower as the ATV, and the cloud forming behind it all.
10am to 1pm is the best time for me to shoot, so that I get the blown-out look I aim for. Once the beach is too packed, it becomes harder to put together my specific style of photos, but heat is my biggest challenge – staying hydrated and not sunburnt (especially since I’m a redhead) is tough when it’s noon and 90 degrees out. I’ll usually go out for a couple of hours, then head back to the pool and relax.
